About me: artist statement
As a post-impressionist artist, my work is deeply personal—an exploration of color, light, and emotion that transforms familiar Detroit landscapes into something extraordinary. Living and working in Detroit has shaped my artistic perspective, fostering a deep connection to the city’s streets, architecture, and natural spaces.
One of my most meaningful pieces, “Rise Above Your Situation,” was inspired by the fish of the Belle Isle Aquarium. In this work, I depict them swimming beyond their tanks, symbolizing the resilience and ability we all have to transcend our circumstances. It’s this theme of upliftment that drives my art—I want my paintings to transport viewers, to elevate their spirits, and to offer a fresh way of seeing the world around them.
The interplay between nature and the built environment captivates me. Through sweeping brushstrokes and vibrant color palettes, I seek to capture both the physicality and emotional essence of a scene. My depictions of Detroit’s landscapes, from the iconic MacArthur Bridge to lesser-known corners of the city, allow me to share my vision of a place that is constantly evolving—much like my own artistic journey.
Recently, I had the honor of being named the first-ever poster artist for the 2024 Belle Isle Art Fair. At its core, my work is an invitation—an invitation to see Detroit, and the world, through my eyes. It’s a celebration of movement, energy, and emotion, created not just to be seen, but to be felt.
